Teacher Manual Outline

The teacher manual for Puberty: The Wonder Years includes puberty education lessons for three consecutive years of instruction. The manual is organized in six sections:

  1. Introduction:
    • Background information on the need for puberty education
    • Preparation for teaching the curriculum
    • Family-school partnership strategies
    • Overview of the curriculum
  2. Tier A:
    • Six lessons for grades 4 or 5
    • Assessments
  3. Tier B:
    • Six lessons for grades 5 or 6
    • Assessments
  4. Tier C:
    • Six lessons for grades 6 or 7
    • Assessments
  5. Optional Lessons:
    • Two optional lessons
  6. Appendices:
    • Media and materials listing
    • Recommended forms
    • Legal information
    • Teacher references
    • Correlations to content standards and benchmarks and other health-related resources

The curriculum was revised in 2007 to align student learning objectives to the National Health Education Standards and update the media listing.

The 2009 revision will add student assessment rubrics and update the media listing again. In response to requests from schools, an optional lesson on condom and contraception use will be added. The teacher manual will include a CD-ROM containing all the student worksheets, family partnership fliers, family activity sheets, teacher masters, and PowerPoint slides for projection in place of transparencies.
